Sunday Outing to Coolart – An Unofficial Visit by Brian Bethune & Some Images From John Ho

…here is my report on the un-official visit to Coolart.

Was it gray and overcast, yes.
Was it windy, yes.
Was it cold, yes.
Was it raining, no, at least not when I went on the walk.

There is an excellent 3.5 Km  walk through coastal bushland with groves of Coast Banksia, banksia integrifolia, Manna Gums, eucalyptus viminalis, Drooping She Oak allocasuarina verticillata with Coast Wattles, Silver Banksias and Melaleuca stands. There is also much wetland both on this walk and another walk around the observatory wetlands and there is also access to the beach.

The Mansion itself seemed rather forlorn it was largely empty and very cold inside. It had a very un-lived in feel to it, I wondered why they don’t use it for some Parks business? There are however a large number of old photographs taken around the mansion of people and farm activities.

Photo opportunities were almost nonexistent due flat grey light and drizzle and some rain.

Verdict, go again when the weather is more promising.

Regards

Brian

John Ho also went to Coolart, here are his images HERE

Tuesday 3rd july 2012 – Is Competition Night

Our next monthly meeting and Competition Night is on Tuesday the 3rd of July, the judge this month is Mr Geoff Sherrington.  I dont know Geoff very well but I must admit when we spoke he came across as being very knowledgeable, very digi-savy and certainly an experienced judge.  I also asked him as we always do of our judges, to send me some stuff that I could use to introduce him.  This is what he sent:

… As for introductions, my wife Colleen and I were members of Camberwell, then a break, then Ivanhoe, then a break again. I’ve been working with APS Management Committee as chairman of the Plagiarism & Ethics sub-committee, but there are personality difficulties so I don’t stress that. I started working in digital photography with Landsat satellite tapes in the late 70s, making earth images from bits in my work in management of earth science projects with large corporations (now retired). The software that we and many others wrote found its way into image programs like PhotoShop and Corel PhotoPaint (I use the latter). Have been doing digital enhancement & manipulation on photos since 1993 or so. Have used high grade camera bodies and lenses, all 35 mm format film, and did not change to digital cameras until Dec last year. Also, I chair a photographic interest group at North Balwyn Probus Club, meeting monthly, and am a member of 3 on-line APS folios, also with monthly image swapping and informal judging. So, over 30 judging episodes a year, including past Nationals. Two main streams in photography. 1. To make images that cause emotion. 2. To work part way between photography and painted art, through image programmes.

That should be more than enough. …

Interesting isnt it?Cheers and Rosie and I will see you all on the 3rd of July at The Craft Room, Mt Waverley Community Centre, Miller Crescent, Mt Waverley. 7.30 for an 8pm start.

Coming Up on Tuesday Night – Framing Matting and Backing Workshop

Amendment Notice – Please note the amendment to the Vice President’s email regarding this workshop night, we will be matting and not mating the prints, sorry.    🙂

This time, at great expence to the management, your Committee is putting together a Framing Matting and Backing Workshop on Tuesday the 19 of June. Fred Bullock, Stephen Edmonds, Dave Sumner, John Hadfield and a couple of others have very kindly offered their time to do this thing and they will also briing along their tools – they will even let you use them for the evening.

What should you bring?
Bring a PRINT, one that you would like to mat all by yourself;
bring some matting material; Abacus Art in Warrigul Road will be able to help you with this, tell them that you are a member of the Waverley Camera Club,  they are used to Rosie and I coming in from time to time and I know that sometimes they like to give away the scrap bits which are quite useful to practice with and bring along some enthusiasm; there is nothing worse than to see that “…do I have to?” look on the faces of workshop participants. The folk helping you are experts in the area and are really willing to help.

So
What are we doing – Framing Matting and Backing Workshop
Why are we doing this – So that you can mount and display your own prints
When are we doing this – Tuesday 19th
What time are we doing this- 7.30 pm should be early enough
Where are we doing this – Wadham House, Wadham Pde, Off Miller Crescent, Mt Waverley

Report: Terry Lane – Life and Times of a digital imaging reviewer, ‘someone has to do it’

Wednesday 13th June 2012 saw a special night at Waverley Camera Club, a presentation by the renowned radio broadcaster, newspaper columnist and well known contributor to the AGE’s Green Guide, Terry Lane. Terry’s 40 minute talk which is entitled ‘Life and Times of a digital imaging reviewer, someone has to do it’ went down very well to a packed Craft Room at City of Monash’s Community Hall in Mount Waverley. Terry’s knowledge of the cutting edge in cameras fascinated members and guests alike and Terry happily answered many questions afterwards. It was a huge pleasure to see that Terry had enough time to stay behind to converse with the members after his talk. Waverley Camera Club would like to thank Terry Lane for giving up his valuable personal time for the benefit of the club members.

Also on display was an exhibition of prints by Waverley Camera Club’s special member, John Friend who is in his ninties. John’s exhibition was filled with just stunning vibrant images that he had taken over his many years as a press photographer. John has worked as a press photographer extensively in Europe, and in Australia he spent years with the now folded Argus Newspaper (which most would not have heard of) and later on 22 years at the ABC Gordon street studios as a Senior Cameraman and later as a Lighting and Technical Director. Many of Johns images are registered and held with the State Library Latrobe Picture Collection and he has also exhibited at the Monash Gallery of Art.

Special thanks must go to the club President, Ian Hansen (pictured below) for organising the entire evening which was a great success.

Change to dimensions of digital images

Effective from the August 2012 competition (entries due on Tuesday, 3rd July) we have updated our rules to follow the dimensions laid down for the VAPS interclub competition:

The maximum horizontal dimension allowed is 1400 pixels and the maximum vertical dimension allowed is 1050 pixels.

Please note that these are maximum dimensions. If you have already prepared an entry at 1024×768 then it is perfectly fine for you to enter it into the competition.

Sunday Outing 3rd June 12 – A Disappointing Turnout

I was a little disapointed that only 5 of us turned up at Churchill Island for the club Sunday outing.  But having said that I am not surprised, as soon as the rain started, last night, my expectations fell.  It was cold and wet but Donna, Brian, Rosie, Diana and I braved the weather believeing some of you might have turned up too and we went out there.  Yes there were lots of things to see, but no not a lot of light to take pictures in. There were several interesting walking paths and indeed we took them but the mild but presistant rain dulled the excitement, must have dulled the senses too.  Highlight of the day was the very good company the fine lunch and being out in the great outdoors.  Thank you for coming Brian, Donna, Diana and My Rosie – the rest of you missed out!

Cheers Andy

Competition Night – Tuesday 5th June 2012

On Tuesday 5 June we have the June Competition Night at the usual place, Mount Waverley Community Centre, 47 Miller Crescent. The theme for the nights competition is ‘Open’ and it is shaping up to be a very good night. The judge for the evening is Jean-Philippe Weibel, JP to you and I and to the rest of his many friends.

JP was born and raised in a small village in the Swiss Alps where he started photographing the mountains and enjoying the climb to do so. He decided to marry a travelling Aussie girl and like all good Aussie wife’s she undoubtedly convinced him they should emigrate to Australia. His photography became restricted to the growing children and the odd holiday shots until 1987 when he joined the Caulfield Photographic Society. Since then JP has helped CPS with its annual beginners course, convened the Judging Panel and having gained experience in the Critique of images, has been visiting camera clubs to judge, critique and evaluate their monthly and end of year comps. He has made forays into many forms of photography – Close up, Portrait, Still life and of course the one that he continually returns to, Landscape. JP recently retired and now has the time to travel our beautiful country where he continues to enjoy the challenge of photography.

WCC welcomes all visitors to the club and a special welcome is extended to the people participating in the Monash Positive Ageing and Lifestyles (PALS) program, please click this link HERE for a description of what to expect from your evenings visit to WCC.

Tuesday promises to be another great Comp night with a bumper number of B Grade Prints, Come along and listen to JP critique our images and remember, it will be an even better night if you turn up and show your support for your club and your fellow members. See you all on Tuesday 5th june at 7:30PM for an 8pm start.

A Ripper Result in Ballarat at VAPS Convention 2012

The 2012 VAPS Convention held in Ballarat over the weekend 19th – 21st May where, in a shock (to him) announcement, Pete Davies received the highest individual commendation which VAPS awards. The State Service Victorian Association of Photographic Societies (SSVAPS) which was awarded to a very uncertain Pete however, I’m sure that you all will join us and VAPS in congratulating and re-assuring Pete that his award is very well deserved.

Pete Davies SSVAPS

For those who are unaware, after Pete notified WCC of his intention to step down from his 5 year role as President of WCC, we secretly attempted to get Pete an award from VAPS for all the work he had done in resurrecting the club and making it into pretty much what it is today, we hoped to announce that award at our 2011 AGM. We also had the recommendation of the Berwick Viewfinders President where Pete had also been a member, to support our case. Unfortunately it was turned down by VAPS due to the 10 year rule where a member has to have completed 10 years as a member of VAPS affiliated clubs to be eligible for an award. At the time Pete hadn’t amassed this only managing 7 years. However, around a year later I received a telephone call from the VAPS notifying me that VAPS had discussed this after our application had been rejected and that they felt that the rules were against such awards where certain circumstances dictated that someone like Pete deserved recognition for the huge efforts that they provided to their clubs and in Pete’s case the wider reaching VAPS. They told me that after the discussion that they had agreed to rethink the rule and had lowered it to 8 years and that they were very happy that they could now award Pete the highest accolade that they had.

We had probably the best attendance for a long time with 6 of members being there for the entire weekend and hopefully this will continue to grow so we can get the VAPS gold star for having the highest attendance at the convention which was won this year by Rosanna. We were treated to some great talks the first from Gerard Saide who told us how to ‘Listen With Our Eyes’ offering a way to interpret images. Terry Lane who is coming to Waverley in June gave his talk on ‘How I became a digital reviewer’ and showed some of his work which was very inspiring. There was some photography work being done outside with Stephen and I opting to participate in Pete’s very well attended ‘Hands on Image Evaluation and Judges Workshop’. The evening brought the annual dinner which again was superb, the food and company were excellent. Sunday brought sunrise photo shoots and a great talk by local photographer, Andrew Thomas who showed us some stunning work including from that morning’s photo shoot. There were other talks and workshops arranged for the remainder of the Sunday plus the Monday but with Pete busy with VAPS business, Stephen and I opted to go out into the countryside to take some shots.

The interclub exhibition was to its normal high standards including the usual contraversial comments from the masses regarding the judges choices with the 1st place image however, that aside, congratulations go to Ray Anderson and Vicki Moritz for their fantastic results in the interclub competition. Ray with huge second place for Red-Eyed Frog, and Vicki with a very well deserved third place for Yarra Bank in Winter. Well done to both of you and to the other entrants from Waverley it’s great to have such talented photographers as members of our club.

Ray Anderson - Red Eyed Frog Vicki Moritz - Yarra Bank Winter

In stark contrast to previous years, this year we came first for the Novice EDPI Aggregate (60 points) and equal second for the Open Large Prints Aggregate (62 points). This is a huge achievement for the club which in previous years has been very restrained in its commitments to both VAPS and the muster. With these results and the results in 4 – Club this year we now need to have a big push and get some first places in next years event. We have plenty of time to practice with Knox B&W on the horizon in the middle of the year. Here are the results of all of the images, the results being based on a score of 15 from three individual judges. The aggregate scores are taken from the top 5 best images from each section for each club.

* Vicki Moritz – Yarra Bank in Winter – 14 points and 3rd Place
