A look back at the outings from 2019

Throughout 2019 the club went on a number of fantastic outings, a huge thanks goes to Helen for organising them.

For each outing we create a gallery and encourage members to upload their images, from these a “mystery judge” will select one image. The winners of the outing awards for 2019 include:

Eildon Weekend 24-26 April 2020

Our annual weekend away for 2020 is being held from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th April 2020. We are staying in cabin accommodation at the Eildon Pondage Holiday park.

All cabins have been held until Christmas for WCC members for the Anzac weekend 2020.
Members are to call Eildon Pondage directly, book and pay one night deposit to hold the booking.
Various options of cabin types: some sleep 4, 5 or 6 people
Price discount will be given to WCC members.
Any cabins not booked by Xmas will then be made available to the general public.
Call and talk to Julie or Kerryn. Make sure you mention you are with WCC!

Some things we are currently planning:

  • Locations for sunrises & sunsets
  • Astro photography workshop
  • Intro into light painting workshop
  • Leisurely drives visiting points of interest in the area
  • The region has some great views

Beautiful sites along the coast near Sorrento and Portsea

Our final outing for the year was a grand success. The weather was perfect which drew 18 people out to visit and photograph the beautiful sites along the coast near Sorrento and Portsea.

Carpooling has ended up being a wonderful way to get to know and have a good chat with other members of our club. Once we arrive we tend to scarper off in groups and share photography chat, settings, equipment etc. until break times where we get back together again and chat about many and varied things.

Colleen, a recent WCC member said, “Sometimes when in a photo club it’s as important to click with the people, than to just click the shutter on your camera, one learns so much more.”

Our first stop was to photograph the dual bays of Bay of Islands and Diamond Bay. The scenery is magnificent and most members were unaware of this site previously. We then moved on to the more well-known London Bridge before ending out year with a convivial lunch at the Portsea Hotel overlooking over the beautiful blue water of Port Phillip Bay.

If you haven’t yet been on an outing in 2019, make a New Year’s resolution to come along and join the fun and take some photographs as well!

A beautiful day for a stroll and animal photography

Fortune smiled upon us for our October Outing to Healesville Sanctuary. It was a beautiful day for a stroll and a bit of photography. We numbered 23, including family members and guests.

We we also fortunate to have had many very experienced photographers amongst us, who agreed to mentor others on the day. Thanks to Dave Sumner, Jen Fawkes, Vicki Moritz, Angela McLeod, Tuck Leong, Steve Hilton and Tim Keane who volunteered to mentor. Thanks also to Dave Sumner who provided a ‘Hints for Animal Photography document’ for all participants.

Low-light challenge both outdoors and indoors

The September outing was a very enjoyable and quite an educational experience despite a very disappointing sunrise. I imagined that the threat of rain and a rendezvous at the Queen Victoria Market at 6am would not attract many but, despite the odds, we numbered eight!

This outing presented photographers with a low-light challenge both outdoors in the early light at the Queen Victoria market and an indoors challenge in the St. Mary Star of the Sea church, a short walk away.

It was a great opportunity for both experienced and less experienced photographers to talk and share expertise and experiences. We finished the outing with a bite to eat and a good coffee at the Common Ground Café at the end of the morning.

Perfect weather for falls, rocks and a bridge

This month during a less than favourable stretch of weather, 22 participants were courageous enough to attend the outing to Dog Rocks, Buckley Falls and the Fyansford Arched Bridge. Fortunately the stars aligned and we enjoyed perfect weather on the day; blue skies and sunshine to warm up in! It was lovely to have new members and guests joining us on the day!

Our first destination was the Lookout over Buckley Falls. Once again, luck was on our side as it had rained so plenty of water was cascading down the weir and over the rocks.

We then moved on to Dog Rocks. The Dog Rocks area was large enough to take our fill of photographs without getting in each other’s frames.

Photographs were then taken of the Fyansford Arched Bridge, built by John Monash and J. T. N. Anderson. This historic three-arch bridge was the largest Monier reinforced concrete bridge in the world in 1900.

We then headed to the Fyansford Hotel and enjoyed a very leisurely lunch together. Some of us went off to other destinations and many others headed off home.
